I read what you wrote about Lea T. (a gimmick). Why would you write such a thing without knowing or understanding anything about her and her history with Ricardo Tisci? In case you care, you are wrong, she is anything but a gimmick. She is possibly one of the gentlest souls and sincerely nice people I have ever met.
I suggest you think twice before taking out your own insecurities/unhappiness on someone else via the safety of your computer.
I apologize. I guess for a lack of a better word, I used the word “gimmick” to describe the possible marketing strategy that could have been behind the ad. Nevertheless, in the ad, she was intended to stand out from everyone else (as can be identified by her red lipstick and lack of clothing compared to the other male models in the ad). Advertising is more than just the (stand out) picture and the company’s name of which the picture represents. There will always be a message attached to it no matter how faint it may appear, because a smart person with a smart ad will bring in big bucks for the season. Despite what we would like to think, money is the fuel that keeps the fashion industry running.
Mind you, the word “gimmick” was never intended to be used to target Lea T. as a person. I among the millions of people who have seen the ads don’t know her as a person. Yet, I still respect her for her boldness. However, she as a person no matter how gentle a person she is will always represent an identity. No matter how gentle or cruel I may appear to be (considering you only know me from what I have done online), I will always be Asian. That is my identity. It forever will be even when my body finally touches the soil of this earth.
Through her identity and who she is, she is not only a friend of Ricardo Tisci’s, she is a transsexual model. One of the few we have ever seen in a long time.
Contrary to what I have said, I care for the GLBT community. I support them in their quest for equal rights. I support them in their quest for legalized marriage in America. (I’m not talking about civil unions. But if that is the first step, then so be it.) I was disappointed when I learned in French class that the PACS was used as a way to avoid the controversial issue of gay marriage in France (this was through the perspective of my professor). I was also angry when my home state of New Jersey refused to agree by majority on the legalization of gay marriage within the state last year. Even so, I still try to look at things from an objective perspective. In the long run, people who only see the ads before they know her in person will associate Lea T. with her identity first before they know who she is as a person. If consumers didn’t know her personal identity, then she must also be someone who is very dear to the designer. Others would think, “How could this be? Models have been recycled and replaced over and over again every season of every year. Is this one model any different?” The answer is yes.
I also wish that you weren’t messaging me anonymously, so that I can also speak to you directly. Otherwise, you would also be hiding “via the safety of your computer.” Whoever you are, I thank you for taking advantage of this forum to contact me directly. This is the most serious post I have ever posted. I would love to devote more posts for that.
