White guilt refers to the belief that your genuine sympathy for oppressed minority groups is derived from your privilege of not descending from a history of being oppressed, and the devastating impact that white domination has had on those groups. Because of your desire to sympathize with these groups and to be recognized that you’re not like the oppressors, your actions in turn overcompensate for these sympathies in ways that are condescending.
once a drunk asshole at a bar told me “honey, there’s enough white guilt for all of us” after overhearing one of my top 5 favorite books is The Diary of Anne Frank. it was probably the most offended I have ever been in my entire life.
